Travel With the Zeds - The Adventures of Bill and Lucie

Who are we and what is this about?

My name is Lucie and my husband's name is Bill. Our last name starts with the letter "Z" and we are Canadians and pronounce that letter as "zed" and not "zee". We and our friends refer to us as "The Zeds".  We live in a suburb of Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada with our adult son Billy. I have a daughter (from a previous marriage) named Joelle and she's been living in Melbourne, Australia for over 10 years now.  Joelle is married to a fabulous man named Fab (what a coincidence eh?) and he has a wonderful son named Ayden.  Joelle and Fab have have given us a beautiful granddaughter named Kiara who will soon be 3 years old.  Bill and I have been retired since the end of 2012.

I love to travel and Bill goes along with me even though travelling is not his favorite thing to do. Bill would be perfectly happy doing nothing but ski during the winter and play golf any other time. That's what makes him happy. I, on the other hand, am adventurous and want to see the world.

I'm writing this blog because I like to write and want to document our travels for those who are interested and also to protect our memories for ourselves and those who care.  Although this blog will primarily be about our travels, I reserve the right to boast about our kids and their kids as appropriate!

Memories of Travel Past

Until 2008, Bill and I had not traveled much beyond Canada except for a one week vacation in the Mayan Riviera with our good friends and our respective sons. We had a great time and this trip erased a few of Bill's concerns about travelling.  Until now (March 2014) we've traveled to Singapore, Cambodia and Australia in 2008 and then in 2010 we did a Mediterranean Cruise, visited Egypt, spent a few days in Germany and a few months later joined some of our dear friends in Maui, Hawaii. In 2011, we headed off to Australia with Billy to meet our brand new granddaughter Kiara. We spent two weeks in Melbourne with family and then the three of us headed off to New Zealand for a week. During the summer of 2011 Bill and I did a road trip from San Francisco to San Diego. In 2012, we were invited to a good friend's daughter's wedding in Ireland so we took advantage of that opportunity to do an extensive tour of the United Kingdom. At the end of December 2012 we retired, so in 2013 we had all the time in the world. That year we spent three weeks in Melbourne during which time we celebrated Kiara's second birthday. As usual, I persuaded Bill to take a little side trip so we spent a week in Bali while we were out there. During the summer of 2013, we traveled to Calgary to visit our niece Sarah and her brother Zachary and then did a road tour via the USA through the Columbia River Gorge and the Oregon Trail.  In early December 2013, we joined a few couples for a week in the Riviera Maya near Cancun, Mexico. I am planning to outline each of these adventures via separate blogs.

Future Travel

This April, we are heading off to China for a 22 day guided tour and after will spend a few days visiting a friend who's been living in Hainan, China for a number of years now.  As usual, I managed to include add-ons to this trip as well, with 2 weeks in Thailand (Bangkok, Chiang Mai and Phuket) and another 2 weeks in Melbourne.  Bill is really looking forward to the uncertain political conditions in Bangkok and to being away from home for 8 weeks LOL! I'll try to keep this blog up-to-date with this new travel even if I have to finish it when we return home.  Next year, maybe Italy and Spain for our 25th wedding anniversary?
